About Backfill

Backfill is a programmable accounting platform built for ambitious startups. An event-driven ledger, a TypeScript runtime, and a dashboard that’s actually yours — designed for startups who’d rather automate the boring parts than click through them.

We’re currently in early access, onboarding design partners directly. Request access and we’ll be in touch.

Why we built this

The accounting software most startups run on is a generation behind the rest of their stack. It’s slow. It’s tedious. It’s locked down — you can’t extend it, you can’t script against it, and you can’t shape it to the way your business actually works.

So teams paper over it: spreadsheets to reconcile what the platform won’t, scripts to pull data the API doesn’t expose, third-party tools bolted on to handle workflows the software should handle directly. And the UI you spend your day in feels like it was designed two decades ago.

We built Backfill because the books shouldn’t be the part of your stack you’re fighting. If you can write code, you should be able to program your accounting platform — not work around it. And the interface should feel like software you actually want to open.

The team

Backfill was founded by a former Stripe engineer who spent years watching startups struggle with the gap between modern infrastructure and legacy accounting software. We’re a small team that’s lived this problem firsthand with our own companies. Now we do our own accounting with Backfill.
